Would you like to know what it feels like to play with the chess pieces Bobby Fischer and Boris Spassky used to decide the World Chess Championship in Reykjavik in 1972?

Known as the "Match of the Century," this highly anticipated encounter was played at Fischer's request with these high-quality, handcrafted Staunton pieces by Jaques of London.

The world’s top two players met in an atmosphere of Cold War tension. The Soviet reign had already lasted for 24 years. The anticipation grew with the delay of the match, casting doubt over whether it would happen at all.

Fischer didn’t attend the tournament’s opening ceremony. Having won the Candidates Tournament with a record-breaking dominance, Fischer arrived in Iceland as the favorite. He had to win because a draw in the series of up to 24 games would mean that the defending champion, Spassky, would retain his title.

Television audiences around the world were shocked when Fischer lost the first game and refused to play the second in front of the cameras, giving Spassky a default win. But the series continued. Known for certain opening strategies, Fischer surprised Spassky by using a different opening in almost every game. He won the historic World Championship with a score of 12½-8½, cementing his legacy as a living chess legend.

With these very chess pieces.
